Peter Gutwein led Tasmania through some of the State’s darkest days during the COVID-19 pandemic and turned the State’s economy around from the worst performing to the best performing in the country for six consecutive years. He was the first Premier to hold a Climate Change portfolio steering the State to achieve a remarkable 100% self-sufficiency in renewable energy and introduced legislation to double this by 2030. As Tourism Minister he set the goal of being the nation’s first carbon neutral destination by 2025 and carved out new opportunities for the State’s sporting economy by establishing Tasmania’s first NBL team in 25 years, securing the Ashes test for the State, and firmly placing Tasmania on the path to achieve its own AFL team.
